Willy Benz studied physics at the Universities of Neuchâtel and Geneva where he obtained his PhD in 1984. He then went on to post-doctoral work at Los Alamos National Laboratory (USA) and was appointed assistant and subsequently associate professor at Harvard University, before joining the faculty at the University of Arizona in Tucson as a professor in 1991. He returned to Switzerland in 1997, as a professor in the Physics Institute at the University of Bern. He currently is the Director of the Swiss National Center for Competences in Research “PlanetS”, dedicated to the study of the formation, evolution, and characterization of planets. Willy Benz has served on many national and international committees. Among others, he is currently the President of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Council.
